MID-RACE ADJUSTMENTS PAY OFF FOR BRANDON MILLER |
CLAREMONT, INDIANA (July 28, 2007) – Brandon Miller’s second run for Key Motorsports in 2007 started with some frustration but ended on a positive note in the rookie driver’s 23rd place finish Friday night in the rain-delayed Kroger 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the O’Reilly Raceway Park.
The 25-year-old San Diego native struggled during the first half of the race with a tight #40 Westerman Companies Chevrolet Silverado. Track bar and air pressure adjustments just did not solve the problem that ended up costing Miller a lap twice in the race’s first 75 laps. Fortunately, cautions enabled Miller to earn the Lucky Dog award each time and to get that lost lap back.
Finally, Crew Chief Gary Showalter went the wedge route in an effort to solve the mystery, the first time coming on a lap 87 pit stop under yellow flag conditions when Showalter ordered two rounds down on the rear load bolt. The effort was repeated just 10 laps later during another caution period, and Miller finally was able to drive his Westerman Companies mount through the corners and challenge for position.
'I didn’t know whether the problem was me or the truck,' Miller explained. 'I’d drive the truck fine into the corners but just could not drive the truck off the corner without it shooting towards wall. It was really frustrating,' he added.
However the wedge adjustments ended up being the solution and Miller remained on the lead lap over the next 78 laps while moving from the 32nd position to as high as 16th (on a lap 127 re-start). His lap times at one juncture late in the event were just a tick slower than the leaders, and only an unwanted yellow flag with just five laps remaining and a last-lap outside pass by Roush-Fenway Racing driver Peter Shepherd at the stripe kept Miller from recording an even better finish.
'I was safely ahead of the 50 (Shepherd) and 13 (Willie Allen) trucks and was running down the 09 (the Ford driven by Stacy Compton) when that caution came out with just five laps to go,' Miller stated.
'On that final re-start, I got boxed in behind the 09 down low coming into the fourth and final turn and the 50 (Shepherd) was able to get a good run on the outside and just nipped the two of us at the flag. I’m really disappointed that we didn’t finish ahead of both those trucks because we were better that both of them at the end,' Miller added.
'Once Brandon got the hang of it and began hitting his marks more regularly, he was able to race with other trucks. It just took a while for us to finally find out what the problem was,' Showalter said. 'Brandon worked his tail off, though, and he earned better than a 23rd place finish, but we are all making progress together,' Showalter ended.
In his two races now for Key Motorsports and under the sponsorship of the Westerman Companies, Miller has finished just a lap down in each race despite having not raced in the NCTS for more than two years and showed marked improvement during the second half of both races.
'I’m getting the rust off and am gaining my confidence with each lap. I just hope to be able to continue that for Curtis (team owner Key), Gary, Tommy (Director of Competition Morgan) and the team in additional races this season,' Miller stated.

Miller 20th in Memphis; Bowyer Wins |
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Oct. 24) – REESE’S Racing driver Brandon Miller continued to display the talent that brought him to Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in Saturday’s Busch Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park. Miller finished 20th and on the lead lap in his 12th career start.
“Brandon just made a rookie mistake out there today,” crew chief Ricky Viers said. “He was trying to pass Tony Raines on the last two laps and pushed the car a little much and spun out. Every rookie makes a mistake like this, but hopefully, Brandon will learn from it. He ran hard all day, and I think people are starting to see why Brandon drives for RCR.”
It was not the end result that tells the story of Saturday’s Busch Series race, but it was Miller’s ability to move from the starting spot of 26th to 10th in just 110 laps. At the drop of the green flag, Miller began his steady move to the front of the field. By lap four, Miller had already picked up five spots and was 21st.
On lap 31 of 254 the second caution flag of a record 15 waved over the speedway. Viers decided to bring the REESE’S Chevy to pit road for its first stop of the day. The REESE’S team performed one of its quickest stops of the afternoon, and Miller was able to advance three spots on pit road. Miller continued to move through the field, and by lap 90 he was knocking on the door of the top 10.
On lap 110, Miller told his team he was experiencing a vibration in the left rear of the REESE’S Chevy. The team prepared for Miller to bring the No. 21 Chevrolet to pit road for service, but the vibration didn’t get worse so Miller waited for the next scheduled pit stop.
Once Miller broke into the top 10, he remained there until he spun out with two laps remaining. Fortunately, Miller saved the car from hitting the wall and finished 20th.
Former REESE’S Racing driver Clint Bowyer won the race and made a small dent in the deficit between Martin Truex Jr. and him. J.J Yeley finished second, followed by Truex, David Green and Carl Edwards, respectively. Truex holds a 100-point lead in driver standings with three races left.
The REESE’S team remains fourth in the team standings with 393 points less than Truex’s total.
Kevin Harvick and the REESE’S Racing team will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 5, at Texas Motor Speedway. The race begins at 2 p.m. EST on the TNT television network and MRN radio network.

Miller Has New Career-Best Finished Sixth |
MADISON, Ill. (Aug. 1) – REESE’S Racing driver Brandon Miller continues to soar forward in his career development, evidenced by a sixth-place finish Saturday night at Gateway International Raceway.
“The REESE’S Chevrolet was really fast all race,” Miller said. “The No. 21 Chevy was a little tight at the beginning of the race, but we made some really good adjustments on the car during the race, and by the end we were just as fast as the leaders. My crew also had a really good night in the pits and they made some heads-up calls to help me stay near the front.”
It was another career night for the Miller, and it began with qualifying. Miller qualified the REESE’S Chevy in the fifth spot with a speed of 133.852 mph (33.538 sec.). This was Miller’s best qualifying effort to date.
At the drop of the green flag, Miller lost a few spots, but he remained focused and stayed inside the top-10 until his first pit stop on lap 31 of 200. During the pit stop, the REESE’S crew made some minor adjustments to help with a tight-handling race car, changed four tires and filled it with fuel. Miller returned to the race track in the 11th spot. Miller remained in the bottom half of the top-20 until lap 91 when crew chief Viers made a call on pit road for two right side tires. This call boosted Miller into the sixth spot.
Reed Sorenson won the evening event at Gateway International Raceway, and Mike Wallace finished second. Carl Edwards finished third, David Green finished fourth and Paul Menard finished fifth.
Despite dropping to fifth from fourth in the team standings, Miller still beat Martin Truex Jr. (26th), so the REESE’S Racing team continues to cut the gap between it and Truex’s team (198 points).
Harvick’s teammate, Clint Bowyer, finished eighth. Bowyer is second in the driver standings, 70 points short of Truex’s series-leading total.
Miller and the REESE’S Racing team will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 6, at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The TNT television network will begin its coverage at 8:30 p.m. EDT. MRN will produce the live radio broadcast.

MILLER’S SUCCESS – Miller earned the first top-10 finish of his short career in the NASCAR Busch Series last week at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Miller started the race in the 21st spot, but within 20 laps he had the REESE’S Chevy in the top-15. Miller would not drop below the top-15 for the remainder of the race and crossed the stripe in the 10th spot.
THE GATEWAY TO A WIN? – Miller has never competed on many tracks on the NASCAR Busch Series schedule, and Gateway is one of them. The first time Miller saw Gateway International Raceway was just a few weeks ago. The REESE’S Racing team went to Gateway to test the REESE’S Chevy. The last track Miller tested and subsequently competed at was Kentucky. He was in the top-10 for most of the race and finished in the 16th spot. At the time it was tied for his career-best finish.
POLE CATS – Richard Childress Racing (RCR) continues its pole-winning ways. Three times in the last four races a car owned by RCR won the pole. Kevin Harvick won the pole at Daytona International Speedway and New Hampshire International Speedway. Harvick’s teammate, Clint Bowyer, won the pole last weekend at Pikes Peak International Raceway.
REESE’S CHEVY PREVIOUSLY AT GATEWAY – The REESE’S Chevy has not finished in the top-10 in its two years of sponsorship. In 2003 Johnny Sauter started 26th and finished 18th. In 2004 Clint Bowyer started 12th and finished 12th. However, REESE’S Racing driver Kevin Harvick had back-to-back wins starting in 2000 driving the No. 2 ACDelco Chevy.
MILLER TIME – Brandon Miller tested this week at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Miller will be in the driver’s seat of the REESE’S Chevy for the remainder of July.
TEAM STANDINGS – The REESE’S Racing team is fourth in the Busch Series Owners’ Points Standings with 258 points less than the leader.
QUICK QUOTES AND NOTES:
Crew chief Rick Viers on Brandon Miller at Gateway – “Brandon is really excited to get to St. Louis. We tested there last week, and he feels confident about the car we are bringing to the track. Brandon wants to put together a solid run to gain momentum for the rest of the season. He is also coming off a great race at Pikes Peak, and we look forward to the same results this weekend.”
On the rookie’s season – “He’s done extremely well. I know that his finishes haven’t shown it, but what he’s been able to do in a short amount of time speaks volumes. Brandon’s going to put together some great runs this year, and he should be exciting to watch.”
Brandon Miller on Gateway – “It’s a cool track. I tested there last week and had a really fast car. The test gave me a chance to get comfortable with the track. Now, during practice I can focus on making the car better. I also really enjoy running on one-mile tracks. I grew-up on these types of tracks, and I am just hoping to put a good run together.”
On his season to date – “I’ve had ups. I’ve had downs. We’ve been good, and we’ve been bad. If I can just put everything together and get a good solid run in the next few weeks, then we’ll have some good momentum heading into the rest of the season.”
On his solid run at Pikes Peak – “I am really excited about the finish we had at Pikes Peak. I feel like a monkey is finally lifted off my back. Now I feel like I got the momentum going in the right direction for this weekend and I am just looking for another quality finish.”

Miller Hits Career-Best Finish at Pikes Peak |
REESE’S Racing driver Brandon Miller had many career firsts on Saturday at Pikes Peak International Raceway, but his first top-10 finish as a NASCAR Busch Series driver was the most notable.
“The REESE’S Chevy was really good all day,” Miller said. “We were a little loose at the beginning of the race, but we made a few adjustments, and the REESE’S Chevy seemed to really take to the adjustments. I am really proud of how hard the REESE’S team worked all weekend. I feel like a monkey is finally lifted off my back, and I hope for another good finish in St. Louis.”
Miller, a native of San Diego, started the race in the 21st spot. At the drop of the green flag, Miller was on the move and was in the top-15 within 20 laps.
On lap 24 of 250, the first caution flag was issued. Miller and the REESE’S Racing team took advantage of the early caution laps and made minor adjustments to the REESE’S Chevrolet to help its performance. The REESE’S Chevy reacted well to the adjustments, and the REESE’S team would not have to adjust the REESE’S Chevy for the remainder of the race.
After the pit stop, Miller returned to the track in the 15th spot. The REESE’S Chevy was almost perfect after the adjustments, and by lap 80, he was in the 10th spot. The REESE’S Racing pit crew also helped Miller gain valuable track position. On lap 159 of 250, Miller brought the REESE’S Chevy to the attention of his crew for its third stop of the day. Miller came down pit road in the seventh position, but with the hard work of the crew, Miller returned to the track in sixth place.
On lap 211, Miller showed his growing maturity on the track when Johnny Sauter collided with the back end of the REESE’S Chevy. Miller was able to move up the race track and keep the REESE’S Chevy from hitting the wall. Miller lost five spots but was able to recover and finish in the 10th spot.
David Green won his first Busch Series Race since Oct. 2003, followed by Clint Bowyer, Kenny Wallace, Martin Truex Jr. and J.J. Yeley, respectively. Bowyer is ranked second in the driver standings, 122 points behind Truex.
The REESE’S team remains fourth in the team standings, 258 behind Truex's team.
Miller and the REESE’S Racing team will be back in action Saturday, July 30, at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis. The race begins at 8 p.m. EDT on the TNT television network and MRN radio network.

Miller Notches 24th in Milwaukee |
REESE’S Racing driver Brandon Miller turned a poor starting position into a satisfactory, 24th-place finish at the Milwaukee Mile Saturday night. The race was shortened from 250 to 200 miles after a storm dumped heavy rain on the track.
Miller’s weekend got off to a bad start when he reported to his team that the REESE’S Chevy had no first or second gear during the first practice. To avoid a penalty, the REESE’S Racing team worked diligently to repair the transmission between the final practice and qualifying. The REESE’S team repaired the problem, and Miller was able to turn two laps during qualifying.
Miller started the race in the 39th spot. On lap 20 of 200, the first caution flag of the day flew over the Milwaukee Mile. Miller, along with many other drivers, decided not to go down pit road to help gain valuable track position. This decision paid off, and Miller was in the top-10 by lap 30.
On lap 80 of 200, Miller, along with many other drivers, came down pit road for a green-flag pit stop. The REESE’S Racing team made minor adjustments, changed four tires and filled the car with fuel. When Miller returned to the track, he was in the 26th spot and two laps down. Despite being two laps down, Miller was not too far behind, since there were only two cars on the lead lap.
Miller rebounded from a poor starting position and finished 24th before rain forced the early ending with 50 laps remaining in the 250-lap event. Miller was credited with completing 197 of 200 laps, and only 10 cars finished the SBC 250 on the lead lap.
The REESE’S Racing team is sixth in the Busch Series Owners Standings, 31 points from the top-five.
Johnny Sauter, who drove the PAYDAY Chevrolet two years ago, won the event. Martin Truex Jr., Paul Menard, J.J Yeley and David Stremme finished second through fifth, respectively. Miller’s teammate, Clint Bowyer, finished in the 10th spot and sits third in the Busch Series Driver Standings.
Kevin Harvick will resume command of the wheel when the REESE’S Racing team travels to Daytona International Speedway for the next race scheduled on Friday, July 1. Live television coverage of the race begins at 7:30 p.m. EDT on TNT. MRN will carry the live radio broadcast.

Miller Earns 16th in Kentucky |
REESE’S Racing driver Brandon Miller continued to show the promise that brought him to Richard Childress Racing in Saturday’s NASCAR Busch Series race at Kentucky Speedway. Miller posted a 16th-place finish, tying his career-best finish.
It was not his ranking at the end of the race that tells the story, but it was Miller’s ability to let a cool head prevail during unfortunate circumstances. Twice during Saturday’s race, the driver in front of Miller was involved in an accident, and Miller escaped with minor damage. During the second episode, Jon Wood crashed in front of Miller during lap 150 of 200, and Miller lost a couple of spots as a result as he slammed his brakes. Crew chief Rick Viers feared Miller’s tires may have skidded and been damaged. Viers brought Miller into the pits to change tires as a precaution. Miller fell out of the top-10 as a result, but he worked his way up to seventh with hard driving and Viers’ pit strategy.
However, Miller began losing positions, dropping to 15th by lap 180, and Viers made the call to change all four tires during the next caution period. Miller hovered between 14th and 16th place for the next 20 laps before the race ended with Miller in 16th place.
Miller started the race in 25th place, and he quickly began passing other drivers. Tim Fedewa crashed in front of Miller on lap 18, and the front end of the REESE’S Chevrolet collided with Fedewa’s car. There was only minor damage, and Miller was able to continue his strong effort without making a pit stop during the caution. Once Miller cracked the top-20, he remained there for the duration of the race.
Carl Edwards won the evening event in Kentucky, and Martin Truex Jr. finished second. Clint Bowyer finished third, Reed Sorenson finished fourth and Paul Menard finished fifth.
The REESE’S Racing team will compete again Saturday night, June 25, at The Milwaukee Mile in Wisconsin. The race begins at 8:30 p.m. EDT and will be covered by FX and MRN.
